In 1920, Po Lin Monastery was built on the Ngong Ping highland, starting out with only a shrine that was dedicated to Buddha. Later on the monastery expanded into bigger halls and then a temple complex. In 1993, the world’s largest outdoor bronze Buddha Statue was built next to the monastery. The majestic outdoor bronze Buddha, with a height of 34 metres and a weight of 250 tonnes, was completed and blessed in 1993. It is the world's largest outdoor Buddha statue and one of the tourist hotspots in Hong Kong. Situated in the Po Lin Monastery, the Buddha is a haven of peace and tranquillity for meditation and contemplation. Vegetarian food is served at the monastery. The two most important Monastery collections, namely the classic Buddhist scriptures and the Buddhist Relics, can also be found there.
